Southend United have today parted company with striker James Walker by mutual consent.

The 22-year-old forward has failed to hold down a regular first team place since moving to Roots Hall from Charlton Athletic in 2008.

He went on to make 53 appearances scoring eight goals and was loaned to League Two side Hereford United earlier this season where he scored twice in eight starts.

James has subsequently signed for League One side Gillingham this afternoon as a free agent.
