Scott Spencer suffered mixed emotions on his Southend United debut at Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
The striker, who played the final 13 minutes in place of Damian Scannell, was delighted to net his first ever goal in the Football League.
But Spencer was also disappointed to have not stopped the Blues suffering a 2-1 defeat.
"I'm happy to have scored but it would have been better to have got the three points to be honest," Spencer told Blues Player after the match.
"I'm very grateful that the manager has taken a chance on me and also put me on in the game and I really want to make the most of the opportunity now.
"It's a good start for me and hopefully now I can build on it and we can have a good end to the season."
Spencer joined the Blues on a free transfer last week having left Rochdale earlier on this season.
The striker had been without a club for nearly two months before being snapped up by Southend.
But the former Everton forward insists he is not short of fitness.
"I feel alright and I've been working hard to get even sharper and fully match fit," said Spencer.
"I'm pleased with how I'm feeling and with the start I've made.
"I thought I should have done better with a couple of through balls before scoring but it was an inch perfect pass from Simon Francis for me and I wasn't going to miss from there."
