TILSON: WE WERE NAIVE

Posted on: Sun 08 Nov 2009

Steve Tilson admitted that Southend United were punished for being naive against Gillingham in the FA Cup.

The Blues chief saw his team create plenty of chances, but knows it is all about putting them away and they were unable to do that in this first round tie.

But with the tax bill now being paid, Tilson hopes to be able to bring in some new players to strengthen his makeshift side next week.

"I thought we were a bit naive today when we didn't have the ball," Steve told Blues Player.

"I think over the 90 minutes we had as many chances as Gillingham, but we haven't taken them and that has cost us.

"Gillingham obviously took theirs and that is what wins football matches.

"It was a fantastic save from Mildy from the penalty and being his first one for us that would have got a demon out of his head.

"It was a body blow to concede those two goals so quickly in the first half though and the next goal was always going to decide the match.

"Unfortunately, Gillingham got it and for the rest of the match we are playing for pride.

"Dougie missed a good chance at the death, but we had a makeshift side out there and need to bring players in.

"The tax bill has now been paid and hopefully, we can bring some players in as we are so short of numbers."
