FRANCIS WANTS TO BE RIGHT-HAND MAN

Posted on: Mon 21 Sep 2009

Francis Laurent wants to be Southend boss Steve Tilson's right-hand man after firing the Blues to a 3-2 victory at the weekend.

Laurent scored an injury time winner against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday after coming off the bench.

The Frenchman was left out of the side in favour of new loan signing Roy O'Donovan but replaced the Irishman in the second half to score his first league goal since November last year.

But despite having been used as predominately as a forward during his time at Roots Hall, Laurent sees himself a winger.

"I feel this is my real position and I did well there in pre-season for the team, scoring a few goals," Laurent told Blues Player after the game.

"I hope to start on Saturday now against Oldham on the right wing which is where I feel I'm at my best."

After bagging a brilliant late effort at the Withdean Stadium Laurent admitted he was delighted to see the ball hit the back of the net.

"I am very happy at scoring and at getting the three points," he said. "It was a good win and I'm pleased I came on to score."

But Laurent began the afternoon frustrated after losing his place in the starting line up to O'Donovan.

The Irishman started alongside Barnard with Laurent dropping to the bench.

"I thought I had done well since coming back into the team," said Laurent.

"I started against Leyton Orient and we won and I thought I did well. Then I started against Leeds and I thought I did OK again, so it was disappointing to not be in the team."
