Steve Tilson admitted that Southend United went from strength to strength, following a 3-0 victory at home to Leyton Orient.
Lee Barnard broke the deadlock from the spot at Roots Hall and went on to score a hat trick in a convincing win.
Tilson felt that Southend made a nervous start, but once they got the opening goal, they took control and he was also full of praise for match winner Barnard.
"With everything that has gone on this week, it was all about concentrating on the game tonight," Steve told Blues Player.
"I said that to the players before the game, but it took us a while to get going.
"We looked nervous for the first 20 minutes and nothing was really happening for neither side.
"But for the last 10 minutes of the first half, we created chances and got going.
"I told the players to keep that momentum going for the second half and as well as the three goals we scored, we created numerous chances.
"We needed that first goal and Barney doesn't miss too many penalties.
"Once we got the second goal, we went from strength to strength and could have gone on to score five.
"It was a fantastic ball from Adam Barrett for Barney to score his second goal and it was pleasing he then went on to score his hattrick.
"It was a fantastic performance from Barney and with his work rate and strength, it all came together.
"Hopefully, we can keep him injury free and he can get a few more goals this season.
"It was also important we kept a clean sheet and I shouted that to Barrett with five minutes remaining.
"We have played better this season and not got a result, but it is pleasing to get our first league win tonight."
