Steve Tilson admitted that two lapses of concentration cost Southend United the three points against Huddersfield Town.
But Tilson had few complaints elsewhere with his team's performance on the opening day of the new League One season and believes that the same application can help them go far.
"I thought we were excellent," Steve told Blues Player.
"The lads worked hard today, but two lapses of concentration have cost us.
"We switched off and it has cost us the three points.
"Up until conceding the two goals, I felt that we were comfortable and I couldn't see Huddersfield scoring.
"If I'm being really critical, we could have had more quality around their goal.
"When we were two nil up, if we had scored again it would have been all over, but even at the death Franck has had a shot blocked.
"If we put in that much effort throughout the season, then we will be okay."
Tilson was delighted with the performance of Franck Moussa and believes the Belgian midfielder can score more goals this season down the left wing.
He said: "It was a good move for Franck's goal in the second half.
"Macca has slid him down the left and he has slotted it underneath their goalkeeper
"I told Franck that playing down the left, if he gets in those areas he will score and he showed that today.
"He has done ever so well and I hope that continues.
"The only disappointing thing was Francis Laurent going off injured in the opening 20 minutes and he has now gone off to hospital.
"He got caught and went over on his ankle and having done all the pre-season to be injured in the first game is disappointing for both him and us."
