NO FEAR FOR BARRETT
Adam Barrett admits that Southend United have nothing to fear, as they prepare to start the new season.
The Blues host Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon, but while Barrett knows it will be a testing encounter, he is looking for the team to buck the trend and get off to a good start.
Southend have not been firing on all cylinders in their opening fixtures in recent years, but Barrett knows that they can beat anyone on their day.
"We have no one to fear this season," Adam told Blues Player.
"We have an inexperienced team, but we are learning and getting more mature after last season.
"If we go out and play our football, then there is no reason why we can't beat anyone in this division.
"Huddersfield have spent a lot of money this year and it's going to be a good test for us to start the season.
"We don't generally start the season well, but we want to put that right this season.
"We have nothing to fear playing them and I'm sure that there will be a big crowd and a great atmosphere at Roots Hall.
"It will also be nice to see Peter Clarke and Theo Robinson before and after the game.
"We won't be so friendly during it, but hopefully, we can have the bragging rights after the match."
Barrett has overcome a knee injury to be ready for the start of the season and is delighted with the team spirit in the camp.
The banter has also been flying about with the loan signing of two players from Colchester United, but the Blues captain is delighted with the new additions.
He said: "I'm ready for the new season and I'm really looking forward to it now.
"I've had a bit of frustration with the injury, but I have come through the last couple of days okay.
"I could have probably done with a little longer rest, but I've come through it fine and I can't wait to get out there.
"We have a tight knit squad here and the lads are really together, because we are a small unit.
"We are going to need good team spirit, which we have always had, and we'll need that throughout the season.
"There is a little bit of stick flying about with the two Colchester lads and I'm sure a few people are going to have some words to say.
"But they are here now and we are pleased to have them. We want them to do well with us and they also want to come here and do well.
"It's good to have a few additions, just to give the place a little bit of a lift and hopefully, they will strengthen the squad and improve the team."
