FIRST PRE-SEASON DEFEAT FOR BLUES

Posted on: Wed 22 Jul 2009

Southend United went down to their first pre-season defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town.

Two second half goals from Liam Trotter did the damage and helped secure a 2-0 win for the Championship outfit at Roots Hall.

Adam Barrett was the first to threaten in the match and came close with a long range effort which fizzed into the side netting.

There was then mild amusement for the fans when Anthony Grant accidentally brought down referee Andy D'Urso, with a sliding tackle sending him to the floor.

Francis Laurent was a touch too heavy inside the box when collecting a pass from Dutch trialist Maceo Rigters, before the Blues' suffered a blow with the loss of Barrett.

The captain limbed out of action in the 33rd minute, with a reshuffle in defence meaning Grant switched to right-back and Simon Francis partnered Jean-Francois Christophe in the centre of defence.

Rigters forced a comfortable save from visiting goalkeeper Richard Wright, but Ipswich became more involved as the match wore on.

Liam Trotter cracked a 20 yard strike against the right-hand post before Jon Walters headed on to the roof of the net on the stroke of half time.

It was a slow start for both sides to the second half, with little action at either end until Ipswich broke the deadlock in the 57th minute.

David Norris found space to deliver a cross from the right-wing and Trotter was left unmarked to head the ball past the despairing dive of Steve Mildenhall.

And Trotter was at it again in the 68th minute, when he took aim from outside the box to arrow the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Southend did their best to response, but to no avail.

Sawyer dallied on the ball inside the box and lost an opening in front of goal before Alan McCormack blazed over the top, after good work from Rigters down the left flank.

The Blues will now look to respond when they contest their next friendly at Dagenham & Redbridge this Saturday.

Southend: Mildenhall, Francis (Herd 78), Bakayogo, Christophe, Barrett (Sawyer 33), Grant, McCormack (O'Keefe 79), Barnard (Revell 61), Laurent, Rigters (Calver 78), Moussa.
