MONDAY'S PRESS TALK

Posted on: Mon 24 Nov 2008

Rob Milsom is backing Southend United to make a swift recovery from Saturday's disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Oldham Athletic. The 21-year-old winger made his Blues debut on the left flank against the Latics after sealing a month-long loan switch from Fulham on the eve of the game. And he saw enough encouraging signs to suggest the Roots Hall reverse would soon be forgotten. "I actually thought we played quite well especially as we were up against a strong Oldham side," said Milsom who spent time on loan with Brentford last season.

Kevin Maher received a rapturous reception at Roots Hall on Saturday. But he then quietened those supporters by helping Oldham Athletic gun down his former Shrimpers side. Maher made 454 appearances during 10 seasons with Blues before being released last summer. And he enjoyed his part in a successful return to his old stomping ground. "The reception the Southend fans gave me was superb and it really does mean a lot to me," said Maher.

John Sheridan was happy with the three points if not the overall performance after watching his Oldham Athletic side win 2-1 at Southend United.Facing a home team with only one defeat in 13 games, Athletic trailed to James Walker's 53rd minute goal before securing victory with two goals in four minutes from Chris Taylor and Lee Hughes. Sheridan said: "It was a steady away performance. We can play a lot better but you can't moan when you come here and get three points.

Kevin Maher and Chris Taylor were both celebrating after Latics earned their second away victory in seven days with a 2-1 victory at Southend United. While Taylor hauled Athletic level with his eighth goal of the season, Maher was happy enough to take three points on his first return to Roots Hall. Having left the Shrimpers over the summer after a decade and 454 games, Maher had been unsure about the reception he would get from the home fans. He need not have worried as United's former captain was afforded a warm welcome back - only for his new team to inflict a first home league defeat in 13 games on the hosts. Maher said: "It (the reception) was great. You're never sure what's going to happen but I was here for 10 years and it was a privilege to captain the side in their most successful period.
