THE NEW "FACE" OF SOUTHEND UNITED?

Posted on: Mon 29 Sep 2008

Ricky Duncan could have found the new "face" of Southend United following Saturday's under 18's friendly with Queens Park Rangers.

The Blues youth team took on a QPR Development XI at Boots and Laces in a friendly fixture and comprehensively defeated the Hoops 7-1.

However, one surprise visitor to the training ground was that of former A-Team television star Dirk Benedict.

Roland Benedict, whose father used to play Face in the hit 80's TV series, is currently on trial with United's youth team and played at the weekend.

He has already spent a week with the Blues and has another seven days left of his trial following a similar trial with League Two Gillingham's reserve team.

"The Football League sent us an email informing us he was looking for a trial," Ricky told southendunited.co.uk this afternoon about the 18-year-olds trial.

"We are seen as a progressive club and we like to look at players from all walks of life all the time so we thought why not?

"He has spent a week with us so far and to be fair to him he has done well.

"Roland played the second half against QPR and showed us he has two good feet so we will see how he progresses.

"His dad was at the game and he likes the Southend area. He should be coming down to see how he is getting on again soon."

Whilst the under 18's will be too young to have seen Roland's dad in action on the small screen that hasn't stopped the banter flying around the dressing room with youth captain Davis Abbey coming in for some stick.

"Davis looks like Mr T so we have been trying to get him to come in with all the gold chains on and everything," joked Duncan.

"He's not been having any of it so far so we've all been pitying the fool."

Goals from Calver, Ljungstrom, Mitchell, Asante, Dennis and a brace from Harry Crawford handed United's youngsters the win.
