Goalkeeper Ian Joyce was able to rejoice in victory after making a winning start to his Southend United career at Gresty Road.

The American shot-stopper made his Football League debut in Saturday's 4-3 triumph at Crewe Alexandra.

Stepping in for the injured Steve Mildenhall, Joyce made a number of important saves and there was little he could do about the three goals United conceded.

And now the New Jersey born keeper hopes the momentum from Blues last two wins can continue to thrust Southend up the League One table.

Ian told Blues World: "I am sure it was an entertaining game to watch and it was definitely fun to play in.

"There was a bit of nerves there but I would like to call it positive nerves.

"We had one job to do and that was to get the three points and thankfully we came away with those.

"You never like goals going past you and I would have liked to have kept a cleansheet but you can't expect to keep one for 50 games a season.

"Thankfully it was one of those matches where we came out on top so I can't complain too much."

Joyce was handed his opportunity after number one Mildenhall injured ligaments in his ankle a week ago against Hereford.

That looks set to sideline the former Yeovil Town goalie for at least a month, and whilst Joyce wishes his team-mate well, he hopes to take advantage of the situation.

"I wish Steve Mildenhall all the best because you would never wish what happened to him on anyone," he said.

"But I am here for a reason to do a job and help the boys get on a run. That's what Steve wants and that is what we all want.

"Everybody is tight at this club and we have to keep the run going into the Leyton Orient match.

"We want the momentum from the last two matches to now push us forward."
