Southend ended their pre-season friendlies with a 2-1 victory at League Two outfit Wycombe Wanderers.

First half goals from Adam Barrett and Paul Furlong put the Blues firmly into the ascendancy while Lewis Emanuel, who is currently on trial from Luton Town, was named in the starting XI at left back.

The Blues made the perfect start by scoring inside the opening two minutes with captain Barrett setting the ball rolling.

Nicky Bailey delivered a free kick from the left and Barrett rose unmarked to head the ball into the far corner of the net past goalkeeper Jamie Young.

Will Antwi blazed over for Wycombe when reacting to a corner at the far post before Damian Scannell had to depart the field in the 29th minute with a suspect groin injury.

James Walker forced Young into a decent save with a low strike that was parried out, but a second goal did duly arrive in the 40th minute from another set piece.

Furlong connected with Franck Moussa's corner to power a header into the bottom corner of the net.

Bailey drilled a low strike narrowly wide of the left-hand post after the break, but Wycombe pulled a goal back in the 61st minute when Magno Vieria tapped the ball in at the far post from Gavin Grant's low cross.

Lewwis Spence had a sight of goal when he headed the ball at Steve Mildenhall from close range before Nathan Ashton ended a swift run forward with an attempted lob sailing narrowly over.

The Blues made a number of substitutions in the second half and it was Wycombe who attempted to pile on the pressure.

Mildenhall was forced to punch clear a corner under pressure, but Southend held out for a 2-1 win.

Southend will now hope that their preparations are in order ahead of starting the League One season at home to Peterborough next Saturday.
