MAHER JOINS LEAGUE ONE RIVALS

Posted on: Thu 24 Jul 2008

Former Southend captain Kevin Maher has signed for Coca-Cola League One rivals Oldham Athletic on a free transfer.

Maher, 31, was released at the end of the season after ten-years at Roots Hall by boss Steve Tilson.

Having spent the second half of last season on loan at Gillingham, the former Tottenham trainee had a number of sides interested in acquiring his signature over recent weeks.

The Gills, along with Swindon Town, had expressed a desire in securing the Irishman's services.

However, on Wednesday Maher put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal at the Latics ahead of the new season.

Making just under 450 appearances for the Blues after joining United in 1998, he went on to skipper the side to two promotions before his exit this summer.

Southend fans won't get the chance to see Maher in action for his new side until November.
