Damian Scannell is hoping he can work his way into Steve Tilson's plans this season following a full pre-season.
The winger, who joined from Blue Square South side Eastleigh last January, has caught the eye during the friendly matches so far.
Having been restricted to substitute appearances last term the winger is hoping to make his full debut at the start of the season.
"When I joined mid-way through last season my fitness was behind the rest of the other lads having come in from non league," said Scannell.
"But I worked hard during the summer break and although I'm not quite up to everyone else I'm getting there and I'm pleased with how things have been going.
"It's been very enjoyable as well but I need to keep it going."
Scannell was a constant thorn in Fulham's side on Tuesday evening as he looked to carve out opportunities for Southend in the first half.
He also impressed against Thurrock last Saturday, as Blues cruised to a 4-0 victory.
"Both games went well but 60 minutes is the longest I've played so far and I was blowing a bit by the end," he added.
"It will gradually build up and these games are for everyone to get sharper ahead of the new season.
"That's what it's all about and we want to try and play well to get into the manager's team for the opening day against the Peterborough.
"The aim is to then stay in there and my own target is to play as many games as I can this season."
