BLUES EASE TO VICTORY
Franck Moussa scored twice as Southend eased to a comfortable 4-0 win at Thurrock.
The Blues were dominant from start to finish, with Lee Barnard and youngster Stuart O'Keefe also adding their name to the scoresheet.
James Walker fashioned the first chance of the afternoon with a low shot drifting wide of the target from the edge of the box.
But the deadlock was broken within 15 minutes, when Moussa let fly from 25 yards with a fierce strike that took a deflection and flew over goalkeeper Shane Herbert into the roof of the net.
Further pressure from Southend saw Barnard shoot narrowly wide of the right-hand post while only a brilliant save from Herbert denied Nicky Bailey from close range.
A second goal did arrive in the 23rd minute when the lively Damian Scannell's cross was only half cleared to Bailey and his return pass allowed Barnard to turn and shoot past Herbert.
Moussa earned his brace four minutes before the interval when he took advantage of Barnard's shot being initially saved to follow up and arrow the ball into an empty net.
In the second half, Walker should have scored when O'Keefe's cross into the box found him unmarked, but he could only aim a misconnected volley straight at the goalkeeper.
Goal number four did arrive in the 55th minute when O'Keefe curled a brilliant strike that hit the underside of the bar and went over the line.
Charles Ademeno nearly added a fifth when he beat the goalkeeper to win the ball in the air, only to see a second header cleared off the line.
Steve Mildenhall was never troubled at the other end, as Southend cantered to their second win of pre-season.
Southend: Mildenhall, Forshaw, Sankofa, Barrett, Blanchett, Scannell (Ademeno 60), Bailey, Moussa, O'Keefe (Jones 60), Barnard, Walker (Henry 80).
