TRAINING GROUND APPLICATION APPROVED

Posted on: Mon 07 May 2007

Southend United sealed possibly the biggest victory tonight they are ever likely to do so, as plans for their new training ground were approved by Rochford Council.

Blues waited with baited breath as the merits of United's new training ground were debated by Rochford Councillors; only 24 hours after Wednesday's decision to hand planning permission for a new 22,000 all-seater stadium was granted by Southend Borough Council.

And in another comprehensive victory Rochford Council backed the Club's proposals 24 in favour, with only 8 against the plans.

The decision now means that the Blues have successfully acquired planning permission from both Southend and Rochford Council's for a new ground the training facility.

Whilst both applications will be subject to rubber stamping from the Sectary of State, it marks a landmark day in the Blues 100-year history.

"I'm absolutely delighted with both decisions," commented Chairman Ron Martin this evening.

"This is a massive step forward for Southend United and a great day in the Club's history.

"All we need to do now is address the Roots Hall application which we will be doing over the coming days."

Another massive following of Blues supporters were present at the Council Chambers and Martin was also quick to praise the Club's loyal supporters, many of whom were forced to brave the cold as Council Chambers were filled to bursting point.

"I wouldn't say I was surprised by the support because I would have expected nothing less from our great fans," said Ron.

"Their backing has been vital and now we will give them a Football Club befitting of their loyalty."

A number of conditions were placed with the approval including the limiting of matchday parking only to the 454 spaces adjacent to the training pitches as well as limiting the use of floodlighting on the all weather surface to specific times during the week, along with the car parking being built in conjunction with the stadium.

Southend United would once again like to express their thanks to supporters for all their efforts over the past few months, along with the last two nights.

The future's bright, the future's Blue and White.
