Southend United suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion to all but end any hopes of staying up in League One.
Ashley Barnes' 15th minute proved enough to settle a disappointing affair, which saw the Blues drop down to 23rd in the table and seven points from safety with just three games now remaining.
Southend made the brighter start to the contest in the sunshine, but struggled to offer a serious threat in the final third of the field.
A free kick from Simon Francis was flapped at by goalkeeper Peter Brezovan before Johnny Herd tried his luck in search of his first goal for the club, but blazed over from 20 yards out.
Instead, it was Brighton who opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Barnes, with their first real attempt at goal.
Lee Hendrie had the initial shot when drilling an effort towards goal that deflected off Barnes, but it was the striker who stuck out a leg to deflect a follow-up shot from Inigo Calderon past Steve Mildenhall and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
It was a goal that took the wind out of Southend's sails and the rest of the first half seemed to peter by with few incidents of note.
Jean-Francois Christophe probably should done better when attempting to connect with Francis' free kick, but completely missed heading the ball from in front of goal.
Glenn Murray also looked like he might add a second goal for Brighton when beating Mildenhall to head the ball past him, but the goalkeeper recovered to gather it before anyone else could react.
Scott Vernon had a great chance at the start of the second half when turning the ball wide of the right-hand post from Francis Laurent's right wing cross.
At the other end, Andrew Crofts blasted the ball over the top from just inside the box before Vernon found himself in a similar position from close range, only to be denied by Brezovan.
Yet the best chance that came Southend's way arrived at the feet of Laurent, as he did the hard work in bypassing a number of challenges to race through on goal, only to shoot wide of the target with just Brezovan to beat.
Harry Crawford saw a header tipped over the top by Brezovan, but in struggling to apply serious pressure to the visitor's goal, the Blues saw time run out as they slipped to defeat.
