A Lee Barnard hattrick secured Southend United's first win of the season at home to Leyton Orient.
After a slow start to the match, the Blues upped the ante after the break with Barnard making it seven goals for the season to secure a 3-0 League One success over local rivals Orient.
Despite neither side managing a serious goal threat in the opening exchanges, Southend were soon up in arms with claims for a penalty.
Damian Scannell cut inside from the right wing and went to ground inside the box under a challenge from Charlie Daniels, but the referee waved away the appeal.
Leyton Orient threatened when JJ Melligan arrowed a long range wide of the right-hand post before a Jimmy Smith free kick was palmed away by Steve Mildenhall, with Johnny Herd on hand to scramble the loose ball to safety.
Southend came closer to causing problems in the final third the closer we got to half time, with Alan McCormack turning inside the box from Scannell's square pass, but blazing over the top.
Francis Laurent came a lot closer though when he rifled a long range strike at goal which was only kept out by an excellent save from goalkeeper Glenn Morris, who tipped the ball over the top.
Southend took control after the interval though, with early chances seeing Scannell divert a cross on to the roof of the net before Laurent's clever pass set up McCormack for a low shot that Morris comfortably gathered.
Orient did have a rare break forward and came close to breaking the deadlock, as Melligan's left wing cross found Andros Townsend alone at the far post, but Mildenhall blocked his close range effort.
It wasn't long before play switched to the other end and Southend were offered a route into taking the lead, when Barnard was pushed over in the box by Stephen Purches.
The striker stepped up himself to score, only to be told to retake the spot kick following encroachment in the box. As calm as you like, Barnard put the ball back on the spot and sent Morris the wrong way to open the scoring in the 59th minute.
Scannell lacked power with a header from Laurent's cross when aiming at goal before Barnard drilled a shot that cannoned into the side netting, with the Blues sensing a second goal.
It was Orient who did have the ball in the back of the net, but their effort was disallowed for offside. Instead, Barnard doubled Southend's advantage in the 78th minute.
Adam Barrett delivered a cross from the right and Barnard arrived on cue to head the ball past Morris.
With time ticking down, Barnard then looked for the opportunity to seal his hat trick and did just that in injury time when his shot from outside the area deflected off Luke Ashworth to wrong foot Morris as it hit the back of the net.
Franck Moussa came close to adding his name to the score sheet when his 20 yard shot was tipped over by Morris, before he struck the post from the resultant corner.
In the end, Southend had to make do with the comfort of winning by three goals and will look to build on taking their first three points of the season when they host Leeds United next Friday.
