Southend United suffered more despair on their travels, after losing 2-0 at Tranmere Rovers.

The defeat means the Blues have now lost their last five away games in all competitions and they were unable to change that pattern of form once they went a goal behind as early as the 10th minute of the match.

Chances were thin on the ground for Southend in this League One fixture and they will now be looking for home comforts to get themselves back to winning ways when they play Norwich City at Roots Hall next Tuesday.

Southend were caught out at the back in the opening stages, with a corner from the left floated to the far post, where Terry Gornell headed it back across goal for an unmarked Ian Goodison to knock the ball into the roof of the net inside 10 minutes.

The Blues looked to response by causing panic themselves from a corner, as Sean Morrison's header was cleared from just in front of goal by Shaleum Logan before Lee Barnard blasted the rebound over the top.

John Welsh fired just over the top from around 20 yards out, with Southend unable to assert themselves in the final third despite Francis Laurent heading a corner over the top.

The first half ended with Tranmere looking to cause more problems, as Gareth Edds' low strike was deflected just wide of the left-hand post.

It was the hosts who were threatening again straight after the restart, with Craig Curran drilling a low shot at goal, which needed a smart save from Steve Mildenhall to turn it around the post.

Tranmere continued to provide the pressure and Zoumana Bakayogo unleashed a similar effort at goal, but lacked the direction with the ball fizzing beyond the upright.

Southend did soon come close to drawing level, when debutant Scott Malone's corner was forcefully headed goalwards by Adam Barrett, but goalkeeper Luke Daniels was equal to the effort to make an excellent stop.

And unfortunately, it wasn't long before Tranmere soon doubled their lead in the 72nd minute.

Logan's right wing cross was deflected inside the box to allow Gornell to react quickest and stab the ball past Mildenhall.

Alan McCormack tried his luck from long range and wasn't far off from a needed reply when he fired just wide before a mazy run from Damian Scannell saw him denied by a last-ditch tackle in the box.

Morrison headed a free kick over the top, but with Mildenhall then smartly saving from both Ian Thomas-Moore and Curran, time ran out for Southend to produce a grandstand finish, as they slipped to defeat at Prenton Park.
