Lee Barnard scored a dramatic 93rd minute goal to hand Southend United a 1-0 win at home to Gillingham.

With the fans in full voice, Barnard's 13th goal of the season lifted the Blues up to ninth in the League One standings ahead of doing it all again, with a first round FA Cup tie at Gillingham next Saturday.

Southend made an excellent start to proceedings at Roots Hall, with James Walker and Francis Laurent exchanging passes to allow the French winger to race inside the box, only for Simon Royce to block his shot at the near post.

Adam Barrett then came close from a corner, with his shot at goal deflected over the top before a mazy run from Laurent then ended with a powerful shot fizzying wide of the right-hand post.

It was heavy pressure from the Blues, but Gillingham looked to offer themselves some respite on the counter attack when Andy Barcham escaped down the left wing to find space to shoot, with Mildenhall making the save, but it still needed Barrett to arrive in time to clear the loose ball off the line.

Another attack saw Simon Francis drill a long range strike that was impressively tipped over the top by Royce.

Gillingham soon had the ball in the back of the net in the 22nd minute, but after John Nutter blasted a free kick beyond Mildenhall, the referee immediately disallowed the goal for pushing in the wall.

A rasping drive from Franck Moussa sailed straight into the goals of Royce before disappointment arrived with Barnard harshly picking up his fifth booking of the season and incurring a one-match suspension as a result to miss next week's FA Cup encounter at Gillingham.

Walker rifled a shot that had Royce at full stretch to parry away and Southend soon came close to providing the best possible end to the opening 45 minutes.

An in-swinging corner found its way to Barnard in front of goal, only for his final shot to be pushed on to the post by Royce and behind the goal.

In the second half, Gillingham were awarded a bizarre free kick inside the Blues' penalty area after Anthony Grant blocked Simeon Jackson's shot and a melee for possession soon ensued.

With the Southend players crowding together on the goal line, Mark Bentley stepped up and blazed the ball over the frame of the goal.

The Blues stepped up a gear, with an urgency to attack, as Barnard drilled a shot that Royce pushed to safety and Alan McCormack headed over the top from a corner.

With three minutes of injury time announced, it seemed as if a stalemate was going to be the final outcome before Southend made those final last seconds count.

Francis delivered a long cross from the right flank, which was flicked on at the far post by McCormack for Barnard to react quickest, keep his composure and arrow the ball beyond a stranded Royce to secure the three points.

Gillingham: Royce, Fuller, Nutter (Palmer 78), Lewis, Bentley, Jackson, Barcham, Gowling, Fry, Oli (Maher 71), Weston.
