A stunning late comeback from Southend United helped them come from two goals behind to earn a point in a 2-2 draw at home to Swindon Town.

Southend endured a nightmare start to the match by falling a goal behind inside the opening 45 seconds and Swindon continued to raise the tempo to double their lead in the 10th minute.

But the notion a game of two halves rang true for the Blues, as they scored twice in the final five minutes at Roots Hall through Scott Spencer and debutant Pat Baldwin.

Swindon came flying out the blocks to open the scoring in the first minute, but it was a goal that should have been avoided, as Jean-Yves M'Voto failed to clear Kevin Amankwaah's right wing cross and Billy Paynter was left with the simple task of slotting the ball past Steve Mildenhall.

The Blues, who lined up in a 5-3-2 formation, nearly did respond in perfect fashion though, when Francis Laurent collected Simon Francis's long ball over the top to chip it over Scott Cuthbert and line up a volley that crashed on to the top of the crossbar.

Unfortunately, Swindon were soon celebrating a second goal in the 10th minute, with Baldwin's attempted clearance ricocheting off Simon Ferry inside the box and falling straight at the feet of Charlie Austin, who couldn't miss when shooting past Mildenhall.

Laurent saw a 20 yard volley deflect wide of the left-hand post, but the first half was void of anymore serious chances, with Swindon happy to play keep-ball in possession and Southend simply unable to break down their defence.

Steve Tilson rang the changes at half time by bringing on Damian Scannell and Scott Spencer and switching back to a familiar 4-4-2, but it was Swindon who provided the early threats.

Mildenhall was called upon to make a smart block from Danny Ward before Lecsinal Jean-Francois headed inches over the top from a corner.

Chances did arrive for Southend though, with Spencer heading over Scannell's left wing cross before a clearance up the field from Mildenhall looked set to put Scott Vernon in the clear, but he was unable to get the ball under control before goalkeeper Phil Smith was able to palm the ball away from his feet.

In between, Swindon did come close to increasing their lead through Scott Cuthbert, as he rose highest to head a corner on to the bar.

Yet as we headed into the closing stages of the match, Southend went for broke in pushing forward and Laurent nearly pulled a goal back after bypassing Amankwaah down the left wing, only for Smith to block his low shot at the near post.

But with just five minutes remaining on the clock, the Blues produced a grandstand finish, as Francis' free kick on the edge of the box was impressively saved by Smith, only for Spencer to react quickest to bundle in the loose ball.

Time continued to tick down, but Southend weren't to be denied and dramatically earned a point in the 89th minute, as Scannell's left wing cross on the byline was headed into the net by Baldwin.

Southend: Mildenhall, Francis, M'Voto (Scannell 46), Baldwin, Barrett, Malone, Grant (Herd 71), Christophe, Moussa (Spencer 46), Laurent, Vernon.

Swindon: Smith, Cuthbert, Douglas, Greer, McGovern, Amankwaah, Jean-Francois, Paynter, Ward, Ferry, Austin (Timlin 86).
