Southend United crashed to a late 2-1 defeat to Brentford, as they were left to rue conceding two penalties at Griffin Park.
It was a spot kick which saw Southend slip to defeat at home to Oldham Athletic on Saturday and the same fate fell upon them again, as they crashed to their second consecutive loss.
A first goal of the season for Simon Francis opened the scoring when his free kick was carried over the line by goalkeeper Nikki Bull.
But Brentford worked their way back on to the scoresheet in the second half and went on to win the game in injury time, with Kevin O'Connor twice scoring from the spot.
Southend lined up with the same starting XI from Saturday's disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Oldham Athletic, but there was a switch in positions in defence, with Francis reverting to right back and Osei Sankofa switching into the middle.
It was Southend who threatened first when Jean-Francois Christophe drove forward for an early strike, but he could only direct his effort into the gloves of Bull.
But the Blues soon opened the scoring in bizarre fashion in the ninth minute of the match.
From 25 yards out, Francis curled a seemingly innocuous free kick into the box, which was grabbed by Bull, only for the goalkeeper to have been adjudged by the assistant referee to have taken the ball back over his own line.
An important save from Steve Mildenhall blocked a fierce strike from Myles Weston, as he found space to line up a shot from inside the penalty box.
It was then Anthony Grant making an impressive block from Sam Wood to maintain Southend's foothold in the match.
There was little by way of chances being carved out after the break, but the Southend fans found themselves in good voice, as Lee Barnard scuffed a volley over the top of the goal.
But Brentford soon had the chance to equalise in the 67th minute, after Sankofa was penalised for a foul on Weston inside the box. This allowed O'Connor to step up and send Mildenhall the wrong way from the spot.
Steve Tilson responded by making a change to the front two by bringing on both Dougie Freedman and Francis Laurent with just over 15 minutes left to play.
Weston had looked to get away from his markers with Brentford on the attack, but his low shot was straight at Mildenhall and comfortably saved.
Play immediately switched to the other end of the field, with Franck Moussa blasting over the top from Laurent's square pass.
Disaster then struck in injury time though, when Moussa was this time penalised for a foul on Marcus Bean in the box and O'Connor again stepped up to score and seal the three points for Brentford.
