Southend United crashed to their first home defeat of the season against Oldham Athletic.

A second half penalty from Pawel Abbott settled a tepid encounter at Roots Hall 15 minutes from time, as the Blues dropped down two places in the League One standings to 10th spot.

Oldham did have the ball in the back of the net in the 11th minute, but Keigan Parker saw his celebrations cut short, after the linesman flagged for offside.

A misplaced pass from Adam Barrett then handed Abbott the chance to try and catch Steve Mildenhall off guard from 30 yards, with a strike which had the goalkeeper back-pedalling before he tipped the ball over the top.

From the resultant corner, Alan Sheehan's cross into the area caused panic before Mildenhall was able to parry the ball out of the area.

Southend's first threat of the afternoon saw Franck Moussa hit a delightful ball for Roy O'Donovan to run on to, but his near post shot was turned behind by Dean Brill.

Another effort from the Blues saw Simon Francis drill a free kick narrowly wide of the left-hand post before it was George Friend's turn to have a goal disallowed at the end of the first half.

There was little action at the start of the second half, with both teams struggling to find their feet in the final third.

Danny Whittaker had space for a shot, but arrowed the ball straight at Mildenhall while at the other end, Lee Barnard was given time to shoot from an acute angle, only to drill the ball wide of the right-hand post.

Southend made a double substitution in the 66th minute, with Lee Sawyer and Francis Laurent entering the fray, but it was Oldham who were coming the closest to breaking the deadlock.

Sheehan drilled a long range strike that sailed inches over the top before Francis then sliced the ball over the top of his own goal, as he tried to cut out Parker's right wing delivery.

With the match panning out to be a goalless draw, Oldham were handed the chance to change that when Friend brought down Parker and a penalty was awarded.

Abbott then stepped up to send Mildenhall the wrong way from the spot.

The closing stages of the match saw Southend pile on the pressure and they had a golden opportunity to draw level in the final minute when Dougie Freedman played Laurent on goal, only for the French striker to strike the ball over the top.

Oldham went on to hold out for the three points, as Southend suffered their first loss in four matches.
