Southend United drew their fourth league game in a row, after a goalless stalemate at home to Millwall.

Driven by Alan McCormack in the centre of midfield, the Blues dominated the match, but were missing the spark needed in the final third to pick up the three points they deserved.

The first half was limited in terms of chances for either side, but Southend took further control after the break by upping the tempo and applying the pressure at Roots Hall.

Anthony Grant blazed over from 20 yards with an early sight of goal before a forceful strike from Lee Barnard was parried behind at the near post by goalkeeper David Forde.

Forde was soon out of his goal to deter Barnard again, when he reached a loose ball first just inside the box to turn it behind. From the resultant corner, Adam Barrett saw his header loop over the top.

The pressure was all coming from the Blues, but the final pass was lacking, with Grant unable to find his touch inside the box with the ball bouncing safely into the gloves of Forde.

Jean-Francois Christophe looked to repeat his midweek feat at Wycombe when he charged forward to powerfully header Simon Francis' free kick, but the ball was directed straight at Forde.

The first half then ended with McCormack going as close as anyone when he arrowed a low shot which fizzed inches wide of the right-hand post.

Millwall had a close sight of goal within the opening minute of the second half though, when substitute Neil Harris headed the ball straight at Steve Mildenhall from close range.

Gary Alexander then came closer for the opposition when he headed on to the crossbar from a set piece, but if it was a warning sign to wake up Southend, then it worked.

An excellent run from Christophe from the middle of the park allowed him to set up Alex Revell and the striker drilled a low effort that sailed narrowly past the post.

Moments later, Revell then cracked a header against the post, only for the offside flag to have been raised as Barnard looked to pounce on the rebound.

There was some excellent build-up play from Southend, but they couldn't find a clear way through the Millwall defence.

Franck Moussa saw a fierce strike blocked from the edge of the box, but the midfielder was then needed to come to the rescue at the other end of the field.

With Southend struggling to clear their lines from a corner, Alexander's header had to be cleared off the line by Moussa, before time eventually played out for both teams to collect a point apiece.
