EXTRA TIME @ SUFC

Posted on: Mon 15 Oct 2007

The Extra Time @ SUFC Study Support Centre opened in the summer of 2005 and operates within the heart of Southend United Football Club.

As part of the 'Playing for Success' initiative launched by the Department for Education and Skills in 1997, the scheme aims to use the power and motivation of professional sport to raise attainment in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT as well as improve the self-esteem, confidence and motivation of children and young people.

The Study Support Centre has a purpose built, state of the art, classroom which is well equipped with a range of desktop and laptop PC's and multi-media equipment. We also have an annex to the main classroom which is used as a more informal space to deliver programmes.

Our range of programmes has grown dramatically since we opened -we now offer 12 different programmes with the centre open from 9 to 7 up to 6 days a week. We work with an estimated 2500 children and young people a year. We celebrated the end of our first year by becoming a finalist in the 'Spirit of Enterprise' category of the Business Links in Essex, 'Essex in Boom!' Awards.
