Southend United came out 1-0 winners against Burton Albion at Roots Hall this afternoon in the final game of the League Two season thanks to Barry Corr's first half header.
The result means Blues will face Burton over two legs in the League Two play off semi final with the first game commencing on Saturday 10th May.
After a quiet opening Southend took the lead in the 22nd minute through Corr's header after Kevan Hurst curled in a superb left wing cross which the striker met under no pressure.
The striker scored his fifth goal in six games with keeper Dean Lyness only able to palm the ball into the net giving Blues the upper hand in a tight contest.
Blues continued to press with Will Atkinson next to try his luck with a left footed drive from 25 yards which missed the target by quite a distance.
Burton hit back with Robbie Weir denied by Daniel Bentley after a superb ball from Phil Edwards gave the midfielder a sight at goal with 42 minutes gone.
Both teams seemed to be holding back slightly with the play-offs only a week away but with 57 minutes on the clock captain John White should've doubled Southend's lead after the ball fell perfectly for him 12 yards out but his tame effort was saved comfortably by Lyness in the Burton goal.
Southend looked to put the game to bed and it was Hurst this time to test Lyness with a stinging left footed effort on the edge of the box which the keeper palmed into the ground before claiming at the second attempt.
Albion had been quiet in front of goal with only one clear cut chance in the game until the 80th minute with Chris Hussey forcing Bentley into a finger tip save from a 25 yard set piece which looked destined for the top corner.
Southend secured all three points against a much changed Burton Albion side as the Blues will look to keep the momentum going against Albion in the upcoming play-off legs.
