Southend United suffered a blow in their push for promotion after suffering a 1-0 defeat against AFC Wimbledon at Roots Hall this afternoon.
The only goal in the game came just before the hour mark from former loanee Jack Midson who tucked the ball away from the spot after John Egan had fouled Kwesi Appiah in the box.
Blues started brightly but it was the away side that had the first chance of the game in the 17th minute after striker Appiah squeezed his way past Jakob Sokolik before Daniel Bentley made a smart saved blocking the shot with his body.
Southend hit back straight away with Will Atkinson's clever through ball finding Jamal Loza who saw his left footed strike from an acute angle parried away by Ross Worner in the AFC Wimbledon goal.
The home side continued to press and Kevan Hurst looked most likely to score with a superb run from the right before cutting in and seeing his left footed strike unfortunately miss the target by a matter of inches.
Loza once again tested Worner with a superb right footed strike which arrowed towards the corner of the goal from 12 yards with the keeper coming out on top, palming the ball away.
The scores were level at half time but Southend went behind in the 58th minute after former loanee Midson scored from the penalty spot after Egan fouled Kwesi Appiah in the box.
The centre back saw the ball slip under his foot and in an attempt to retrieve it he fouled Appiah in the box, Midson stepped up and fortunately saw his penalty slide under the grasp of Bentley into the net.
Southend looked for the equaliser and Egan tried to make amends for his earlier mistake with a superb long distance effort which looked destined for the net only to see Worner somehow palm the strike away with a strong right hand.
Blues were frustrated in the final stages of the game after a resilient AFC Wimbledon held onto all three points as Southend's push for promotion took a hit.
