Report: Southend United 1-0 Torquay

Southend United made it back-to-back wins at they beat Torquay United 1-0 to move back into the play-off places.

After a frustrating first half Southend took the lead in the 72nd minute after debutant Jacob Murphy set up Freddy Eastwood who confidently tucked the ball away at the back post.

Blues started brightly but it was the away side who had the first real chance of the match after 13 minutes with captain Lee Mansell slicing an effort just wide of the goal after Southend failed to clear their lines from a free-kick.

Southend continued to press and somehow failed to score in the 20th minute after Kevan Hurst's short corner found Jakob Sokolik at the back post and the centre back cleared the crossbar with an outstretched effort much to his disappointment.

With half time approaching Blues nearly found the back of the net once again after Lee Barnard's attempted flick over the keeper found the roof of the net from Sokolik's header across goal.

With the scores level at half time, Southend came out all guns blazing in the second half and had three chances within a matter of minutes.

Barnard's deflected effort went inches wide of the post and from the resulting corner John White saw his header clip the top of the bar with the ball looking destined for the back of the net.

Barnard was at it once again, firing just wide of the goal from 20 yards after Hurst teed him up on the edge of the area after cutting in from the left.

Southend continued to press with Torquay sitting deeper as the game continued, Hurst once again cut in and fired a low right footed drive which had Martin Rice sprawling across his goal with the ball just missing the target.

Blues' persistent pressure finally paid off in the 72nd minute after substitute Eastwood tucked the ball away at the back post much to the crowds delight.

Debutant Jacob Murphy fired in a low cross which somehow made its way to Eastwood at the back post who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from six yards out.

Torquay came back into the game after going behind but Southend United held on to victory securing their second win in a row after defeating Oxford United in Monday night.

The three points extended Blues’ unbeaten run to five games, and made it four clean sheets in a row, with 17 so far this season.
