Barry Corr gave Blues the lead just after the hour mark with a trademark header but Wycombe replied almost instantly in bizarre fashion with Daniel Bentley unfortunately being credited with an own goal.
Southend had the first chance of the game in the fifth minute with Kevan Hurst firing at goal from 20 yards after the ball fell kindly for the midfielder, the effort was inches wide of the target with Matt Ingram rooted to the spot in the Wycombe goal.
Chances were limited in the first half with neither team testing the keepers but with 28 minutes gone Ryan Leonard fizzed a 25 yard effort at goal which had Ingram sprawling across his line to tip round the post.
Bentley pulled off a terrific save in the 38th minute after Wycombe defender Anthony Stewart rose the highest in the box and powered a header at goal which Bentley somehow managed to palm away to safety with the ball looking destined for the net.
Both sides went in at the break level and Southend looked the more threatening in front of goal with Anthony Straker shooting just wide of the mark inside the area after the ball fell kindly for the midfielder.
Blues broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute with Corr's header finding the back of the net after a period of pressure from the home side.
Hurst's whipped in a corner from the right which found the head of the Southend striker who managed to the guide the ball into the goal much to the frustration of the Wycombe player on the line who tried to clear.
The lead was short lived with the away side equalising seven minutes later in bizarre fashion with the goal unfortunately going down as an own goal by keeper Bentley.
Substitute Cowan-Hall unleashed a superb effort at goal which struck the bar before hitting Bentley on the back as he dived for the effort before creeping into the net much to Bentley's disbelief.
Southend pressed for a winner but could not find it with the Wycombe defence holding their own, the draw meant that the frustrating run extended to nine games without a win for Blues.
