Southend United were held to a 0-0 draw against Bristol Rovers at Roots Hall this afternoon.
Blues wasted a hatful of chances as they were unable to find the net in a frustrating encounter that saw the visitors failed to register a meaningful shot on target.
The opening stages of the match were quiet with both teams struggling to create any clear cut chances with Southend first to test the Bristol Rovers defence.
Matthew Lund tried his luck with a 25 yard free kick in the 19th minute which had former Blues keeper Steve Mildenhall sprawling across his goal as it just missed the target.
A minute later Southend should’ve taken the lead after Marc Laird’s cross found Ryan Leonard unmarked in the box only to see his weak header easily saved.
The home side continued to press and on the stroke of half time they nearly took the lead through a Ryan Cresswell header after he connected superbly to Sean Clohessy’s cross only to see the ball miss the target by a matter of inches with Mildenhall rooted to the spot.
Blues started the second half brightly and had a glorious opportunity in the 49th minute with Barry Corr side footing an effort towards goal which skimmed the foot of the left hand post.
It continued to be all Southend with Britt Assombalonga the next to spurn an opportunity in the 57th minute front of goal after Clohessy’s cross found the Watford loanee with acres of space before he headed wide of goal.
Blues were not having much luck in front of goal with Corr heading agonisingly wide from 10 yards with Mildenhall nowhere near the ball.
Bristol Rovers struggled to get anywhere near the Southend goal with the home team creating all the chances, Freddy Eastwood stung the gloves of Mildenhall with a long range effort with Assombalonga seeing his follow up effort saved smartly by the keeper from an acute angle.
The match finished the draw as Bristol Rovers frustrated the Southend attacking line with Blues unable to pick up three points in their last eight games.
